12 Nov 2019 --- Burger King is strengthening its foothold in the booming market for plant-based foods served in restaurant chains by partnering with Unilever’s The Vegetarian Butcher on the launch of its Rebel Whopper. The fast food giant is rolling out the meat-free version in over 2,500 Burger King restaurants across 25 countries in Europe. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The Rebel Whopper features the same burger build as the store’s traditional beef-based option – tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise, pickles, and sliced white onions on sesame seed bun. Mayo can be removed to make the option free of animal ingredients, though it is not vegan as the patty is cooked on the same grill as meat. Sam Calver, from The Vegan Society, said it seemed there had been a “missed opportunity” by Burger King in not making the Rebel Whopper fully vegan. 4 The Advertising Standards Authority Burger King had included a disclaimer in the small print of various adverts, which explained that the Rebel Whopper was cooked alongside meat products. However, the ASA considered that the wording was not sufficiently prominent to displace the overall impression that the burger was vegan / vegetarian friendly.
